Kiawah Retreat // Charleston
Southern Tide // Charleston 5 Beds 5 Bath Sleeps 14 Situated on beautiful Kiawah Island, this 5 bedroom, 5 bath, 6,000 sq. ft. property
This mid-century inspired modern home was designed by O’Donnell + Escalante Architects; from 1994-2006 one of Palm Springs’ premiere architectural firms, known for its inspired modernist designs.
Completed in 2008, this masterpiece of glass, steel and concrete block sits on 3/4 acres, at the edge of the desert. Located on a private road in the prestigious Cahuilla Hills enclave, it is situated among other historic homes on the surrounding hillsides.
Although over 3700 sq. ft. in size, the home still manages to retain an intimacy not often associated with large, modern residences. This is fostered by the “H” shaped courtyard plan, as well as the creative use of varying ceiling heights, topped by clerestory windows, which serve to define the spaces while filling the rooms with light.
Walking through the glass and steel front doors, you encounter the dramatic view through the floor-to-ceiling wall of sliding glass doors, which comprise the entire southern wall of the living room.
The centerpiece of this room is a custom fireplace with cantilevered concrete hearth and white enameled steel canopy suspended from the ceiling. Adding both drama and warmth, this anchors the room, which is decorated in shades of taupe, cream and gray, inspired by the color of the terrazzo tile floors. The entire home is furnished in a mixture of vintage and modern, including two Bertoia Bird chairs which were purchased from the estate of the late Lena Horn.
Moving towards the bedrooms, you will be struck by the fact the home is comprised of two almost completely independent buildings, separated by a long narrow atrium. Standing at the intersection of these two structures, be sure to look in all three directions to see a reoccurring theme; a long terrazzo-tiled hallway which terminates with a large granite boulder. The image evokes a Zen rock garden, in its repetition and simplicity.
This home has had the honor of being the finale home of the Signature Home Tour of the 2015 Palm Springs Modernsim Week, as well as featured in photo shoots used in Elle Decor and Land Rover Magazines.
All together, the inspired modern architecture and dramatic desert location make this a truly spectacular addition to the legacy of Palm Springs best historic homes.
